Many aircraft owners and fleet managers are trying to find the lowest-possible-cost-solution to meet the ADS-B mandate and navigate the process themselves
While this is certainly possible, it is certainly challenging and time-consuming as well.
Here is the process in a nutshell:
Research and Select ADS-B Equipment
Begin by researching the type of ADS-B equipment you’ll need and the different avionics manufacture’s offerings. You’ll want to decide if you only need ADS-B Out, or if you want to upgrade to an ADS-B In solution as well. Appraise individual pieces of equipment based on your desired feature set, budget, type of aircraft, and any other factor that may be important to you.
Locate Avionics Repair Stations with Approved Solutions
The next step in the process is locating avionics repair stations that have FAA approved ADS-B Out system pairings (transmitter/GPS) that match both your specific model of aircraft as well as the specific type of ADS-B equipment you have selected. Verify the installer has an Amended TC, STC or AML STC for the system installation on your aircraft. Ensure you are only working with authorized dealers and certified avionics shops. They have the approval and expertise to install the equipment correctly (the first time) saving you time and money in the long run, meaning this could take a while.
Begin the RFQ Process, Select Vendor
After you have identified the avionics shops in your general region that have approved solutions for your specific aircraft and equipment, you’ll want to begin the quoting procedure. Speak with their sales team and get formal quotes in writing from each vendor under consideration. After that, it’s simply a matter of comparing and contrasting the quotes, and selecting the one you feel is the best fit and value for your specific needs.
Successfully navigating through the purchase and installation of ADS-B equipment on your own isn’t necessarily difficult, but it is extraordinarily time-consuming. It’s easy to sink a dozen or more hours simply into researching different types of ADS-B equipment and features, let alone all the back-and-forth with the sales reps from however many vendors you end up seeking proposals from.
Another huge difficulty is ensuring that you’re getting a good deal, even if you do all the legwork yourself; you’re only going to realistically be able to directly contact a proportion of the vendors out there merely through logistical limitations, meaning that you’re almost certainly leaving money on the table compared to an aircraft owner who schedules their ADS-B installation through the Equip ADS-B Marketplace.
The Equip ADS-B Marketplace enables aircraft owners or fleet managers to fill out one Request for Quote (RFQ). The avionics shops that are within the service radius that the owner chose can review the RFQ and propose a solution and price.
Try it out! It is absolutely free of charge!
