About two weeks ago, on November 22, the FAA issued an emergency order which suspends the ability of NavWorx, Inc. to manufacture particular types of ADS-B avionics equipment and the Technical Standard Order Authorization (TSOA) under which they operate.
The FAA was reportedly concerned that two specific units manufactured by the company contain internal GPS chips that don’t meet the performance standards mandated by the FAA in terms of ADS-B equipment.
This move was made in response to NavWorx denying entry to their manufacturing facility on three separate occasions to FAA inspectors, after previously granting them permission to perform their inspections.
NavWorx denies that the chips used are substandard, and believes the FAA may be amenable to adjusting or rescinding the airworthiness directive prohibiting usage of the components in question. Whether that is the case, or whether or not NavWorx will become embroiled in a costly and challenging recall right as the ADS-B business begins to take off remains to be seen.
An excellent summary of the situation to date, as well as the complete content of the two statements made in full by NavWorx President Bill Moffit, is available at GPS World.
This is of course extremely unfortunate for aircraft owners who have already purchased or have been considering NavWorx equipment. We here at the Equip ADS-B Marketplace would like to point out a few features that we have built right into our platform that can help mitigate risks like this for aircraft owners.
Firstly, you will have access to other aircraft owners’ reviews and ratings both of particular avionics transponders and individual pieces of equipment, as well as ratings of the avionics shops installing them.
This may be of particular concern, given that the FAA estimates a significant percentage of ADS-B installations are not being installed and configured up to code. In fact, next week the FAA is due to release a special report on this exact problem, which we will cover here at the Marketplace so stay tuned in coming weeks for that.
Next, the Marketplace serves as a one-stop information source for owners, covering everything relevant to ADS-B. You not only have access to ratings and reviews made by other aircraft owners, but all the curated news and information you could ever ask for from the manufacturers, avionics shops, the FAA, and every other stakeholder in general aviation.
And remember – the Marketplace is always 100% free for our aircraft owners to use, so there is no downside to registration. Sign up today if you haven’t already.
